Josephshöfer Riesling Spätlese
Josephshöfer Riesling Spätlese - 2004 - Reichsgraf von Kesselstatt
Ref: A090104
From the great 2003 vintage; rich, luscious, honeyed delicacy. Overwhelming smell as if you were in a herb garden, multiple and almost endless. Impressive taste as if you had a basket full of wonderful ripe fruits. Dense and full-bodied, fruity sweetness couple with brilliant acidity. A really a great wine! Drink now to 2013.

The south-facing steep escarpment with inclines of up to 60° is located at up to 180 m above sea level and has a deep, gray, weathered Devon slate soil with a high proportion of fine earth, relatively heavy soil for Mosel conditions. The results are full-bodied, aromatic wines with an unbelievable maturing potential. The other characteristics are the distinctive peach aroma with a trace of wild herbs, fine earthy components and a great deal of elegance.

The Josephshöfer monopoly domain was mentioned in official documents initially 1,100 years ago. This gem, a one-time monastery including a vineyard that is only 5 hectares big, was purchased by Count Kesselstatt following secularization in 1868. Josephshöfer belongs to the famous community of Graach along the Central Mosel and the wine is somewhere between the Wehlener Sonnenuhr and the Graacher Domprobst.

A new developement starting with the 2003 vintage is the use of a very old label design which probably dates back to the later half of the 19th century. It is rather endearing in that four traditional sayings are inscribed upon the label:

Say what is true (Red, was wahr ist) is shown with a picture of a hunter who is closely listening to somebody telling a tale.
Drink what is clear (Trink, was klar ist) shows a merry wine drinker who is just lifting his glass to the light.
Eat what is properly cooked (Iss, was gar ist) shows a family at a set table and
Appreciate what is rare (Lieb, was rar ist) is illustrated by a young woman whose lover is kneeling in front of her.

Von Kesselstatt focuses on the natural characteristics of the vineyards and applies the utmost care to maintain the natural fertility of the soil. Yields are held very low between 40 and 55 hl per hectare by pruning and green harvest. Fertilization is conducted according to organic principles and all means are geared towards support of the natural ecosystem.

The knights of von Kesselstatt first arrived in the Duchy surrounding the town of Trier as early as the 14th century.

The Kesselstatt Palace, situated in the heart of Trier opposite the Cathedral is one of the most remarkable examples of Baroque architecture north of the Alps and was home to the Estate and its wines from 1746 until 1999. The entire Palace, including the inner-courtyard was lovingly restored to their original glory by Gunther Reh following his aquisition of the Estate in 1978.Today the Palace is a thriving cultural centre and popular meeting place with its winebar and Kesselstatt restaurant. In 1983, Annegret Reh together with husband Gerhard Gartner succeeded her father as head of the Estate. In 1999, together with their long-serving team they transfered the entire wine operation to purpose built facilities on the River Ruwer at Schloss Marienlay.

Annegret and Gerhard Gartner have, over the past decade been able to achieve the almost impossible, that delicate balance between a successful working relationship and private life. Inseparable both from each other and their love for food and wine.

Reichsgraf von Kesselstatt today ranks among the most prestigious and renowned Riesling Estates on the Moselle and indeed throughout the whole of Germany.
