This really is the domaine of the good and the greatest as only this calibre of wine has the mineral complexity, derived from unique terroir and/or hand-crafting in the wine-grower's cellar, the compact tannins and necessary acidity coupled with richness of fruit and body. All qualitites essential to a longer and more rewarding life in bottle!
You may be considering something to offer as a christening present or be planniing your own cellar for your later years. Whatever you need it is essential that you select only those wines from good vintages which have the right constituents for long-term cellaring.
Château Cos Labory, 2000 - 5eme Cru Classé, St. Estèphe - £33.52 per bottle |
![]() With the wonderful success of 2003 in St. Estèphe due to their more water retentive soils it is little wonder that Bernard Audoy has made another first class Cos. Situated next to the more famous Cos d'Estournel, this property is ideally suited to make a complex, ripe and fruity wine. There are big tannins present here which will ensure long life. This has to be one of the best value wines on St. Estèphe. Since 1971, the Audoy family have owned the rising star of St. Estèphe, Château Cos Labory, a 12-hectare estate which is immediately opposite its renowned neighbour, Cos dEstournel. We started buying wines from the Audoys back in the late 1970s but it was not really until 1986 that the châteaus true potential was realised when the family undertook to invest in a new cuverie and introduced a stricter selection process for the first (main) wine. In recent vintages, the wines have had great extraction and matière, representing some of the best value when it comes to cru classé drinking.
