For the Future - 15 Years plus .....................................................................................................................................................................................................
This really is the domaine of the good and the greatest as only this calibre of wine has the mineral complexity, derived from unique terroir and/or hand-crafting in the wine-grower's cellar, the compact tannins and necessary acidity coupled with richness of fruit and body. All qualitites essential to a longer and more rewarding life in bottle!
You may be considering something to offer as a christening present or be planniing your own cellar for your later years. Whatever you need it is essential that you select only those wines from good vintages which have the right constituents for long-term cellaring.
Mazis-Chambertin, 2002 - Domaine Dupont-Tisserandot - £47.87 per bottle
The Mazis-Chambertin has its emphasis in finesse and elegance but with an amazing vigorous intensity of fruit ensuring great length and class. From the great 2002 vintage this wine is sensational. A richer. denser Mazis than usual with concentrated red and black fruits on the palate, excellent balance and full tannins, this will not begin to drink for several years. Drink 2013 - 2028.
These are hand crafted wines of the highest quality and are amongst the finest Côte de Nuits reds we have recently tasted. Now that we have established a track record with the family, we now have a decent allocation of some of their Premier and Grand Cru wines. The Mazis-Chambertin there is an emphasis on finesse and elegance but an amazing vigorous intensity of fruit ensures great length and class.
Château Cos Labory, 2003 - 5eme Cru Classé, St. Estèphe - £22.67 per bottle
With the wonderful success of 2003 in St. Estèphe due to their more water retentive soils it is little wonder that Bernard Audoy has made another first class Cos. Situated next to the more famous Cos d'Estournel, this property is ideally suited to make a complex, ripe and fruity wine. There are big tannins present here which will ensure long life. This has to be one of the best value wines on St. Estèphe.
Since 1971, the Audoy family have owned the rising star of St. Estèphe, Château Cos Labory, a 12-hectare estate which is immediately opposite its renowned neighbour, Cos dEstournel. We started buying wines from the Audoys back in the late 1970s but it was not really until 1986 that the châteaus true potential was realised when the family undertook to invest in a new cuverie and introduced a stricter selection process for the first (main) wine. In recent vintages, the wines have had great extraction and matière, representing some of the best value when it comes to cru classé drinking.
