Cuvée Ar 26
-
2002
-
Chateau d'Oupia
Ref: A061002
We have just added this extraordinary 100% Grenache cuvée - AR 26, which is the number of the parcel of 70 year-old vines used. It has a fantastic coffee and raisins nose, really big almost sweet ripe fruit and a silky, soft mouth feel. This is a prime example of a handcrafted wine. A recent tasting alongside some lamb stew showed this wine to be absolutely delicious. It had an sweet nose with overtones of tobacco and tar which were followed up by a massive soft friuty palate with a long fine finish. Being 100% Grenache it is really very soft and not perhaps what one might expect from a Minervois but none the less very enjoyable.
We were very sad to hear that André Iché, Oupia's charming owner, died at the end of 2007 but his daughter, Marie-Pierre, has taken over the reins and will no doubt continue the remarkable run of award-winning wines from the Minervois region. The Ichés are Carignan specialists and have a number of parcels that date back over 100 years.
Their 'village' Minervois is succulent, intense and richly coloured whilst the Cuvée de Barons is nearly all old vine sourced and has a remarkable complexity and length, seeing a 12-month oak 'élevage'. The 'Nobilis' comes from a single vineyard site in the Beaufort zone and is almost opaque in colour, has an amazing texture and black-fruit complexity coupled with velvety tannins. The Rosé radiates zesty, strawberry-tinged fruit, is very pale in colour and is made from lightly pressed Grenache, Syrah and Cinsault. The Vin de Pays is very serious: full of coffee/cocoa fruit and terribly soft and concentrated.
