Saint Amour - 2005 - Domaine du Clos des Carrières

This St. Amour is voluptuous, with a silky fruitiness and intensity and depth of colour. There are black-cherry overtones and ripe tannins which help to contribute towards this delicious wine’s overall mouthfeel.

In France, especially around Valentine's day, St. Amour outsells many other well-known Cru Beaujolais. For some reason we struggle to sell this most northerly Cru. Stylistically St. Amour marries some of the weight of Moulin-à-Vent with the more elegant charms of a Chiroubles. That ought to be romantic enough for us English!

Domaine du Clos des Carrières is owned and run by the young and stocky Christophe Terrier. His main wine is the red Cru Beaujolais of Saint Amour whilst he also owns some old vines in the Clos Reyssier vineyard of Pouilly-Fuissé. His Beaujolais Blanc from the lieu-dit (which means a small specific plot of vines) of Moulin à l'Or (the Golden Mill) is not often seen outside of the Beaujolais region. This vineyard is in the northern part of Beaujolais near to many St. Véran vineyards in the Maconnais.
