Rasteau-Villages - 2006 - Domaine la Soumade

"The superstar of Rasteau is André Roméro [of Domaine la Soumade] who produces five cuvées of drop-dead gorgeous red wine." Robert Parker was obviously excited!

André shares his three big passions with the best chef in the area and they all point to the type of guy he is - wine, food and Marseille football. He is a small gaunt man with striking grey eyes and is entirely self-taught and believes passionately in low yields (35 hectolitres per hectare for this Villages wine) and extended fermentation. He has invested in an automatic pigeage system along Burgundian lines which ensures maximum extraction.

The Grenache, Syrah and Mouverdre grapes (roughly a third each but this varies slightly in each vintage) are cold macerated for 4 days before a fermentation of about 20 to 30 days. The wine is then matured in concrete tanks for a year before going into oak for 6 months. There is no filtration before bottling but fining is done with egg whites.

The resulting wine is soft, yet sturdy, with berry flavours and a whiff of wood-smoke betraying its provenance.
