Vouvray Sec - 2005 - Domaine Vigneau-Chevreau

A dry and refreshing Vouvray with hints of lime blossom and acacia on the nose and a ripe, satisfying fruitiness on the palate.

Domaine Vigneau-Chevreau has about 28 acres of vineyard lying around four of the eight villages that form the Vouvray appellation. Having these different sites with vines growing in a variety of different soils means that the family can get lots of complexity and intensiity in their wines. Since 1995 they have been moving the vineyard and winery over to biodynamism.

Part of their vineyards lie around the ancient Abbey de Marmoutier which were reputedly planted by St Martin of Tours in 371 when he was Bishop of Tours. He found a small wild vine in the forests and carefully placed it in a a bird bone for safe keeping. This he placed in a lion bone for even safer keeping which was then placed in a donkey's bone. In the autumn, the vine produced wonderful grapes which made enough wine to fill three jugs. Once the first jug was drunk, people were singing like birds; once the second jug was empty, people were feeling strong as lions; and once they had finished the third, they found each other braying!
