Saumur Blanc
Saumur Blanc - 2007 - Château de Villeneuve
Ref: A059007
Fresh and clean with a floral nose and a honeyed finish

Chenin Blanc has to be one of the most versatile grape varieties in the world. It is a major component of blended wines (of variable qualities) in Australia and California and also found extensively in South America and South Africa. Its natural acidity makes it the perfect base for any number of sparkling wines worldwide. It reaches its peak however in the Loire Valley, where it produces stunning crisp dry whites, sparklers that have the ability to age with real style, and unctuous world-beating sweet dessert wines.

The Chateau de Villenueve estate has been described as the 'Petrus of Saumur Champigny' which is praise indeed, but the wines justify such comment. The estate is just to the south of the historic town of Saumur, which is dominated by its majestic chateau which overlooks the Loire. Chateau de Villeneuve takes its name from the original Villeneuves who lived in the chateau for 300 years. The winemaker is Jean-Pierre Chevallier, who previously taught winemaking at Bordeaux University before returning to the family property. To retain the natural freshness of the variety the majority is fermented in stainless steel, with just 10 % being fermented in barrel, but the real secret is that it is not filtered, a process that can often remove subtle but important elements of flavour.

The Chevaliers are practitioners of the "Lutte Raisonee" or semi-organic/ecologically-minded approach to vine culture. Under this system natural treatments, vine cultivation, vineyard management and vine pest remedies are used wherever possible.

Saumur Blanc is one of the finest appellations for Chenin Blanc on the Loire, where in very good years its normal floral and lightly honeyed freshness can become quite rich and full with overtones of peaches. It makes for a wonderful aperitif but will accompany a wide range of foods including simply cooked freshwater fish and any number of dishes sourced from the young spring vegetables that are grown on the flat flood plains to the north of the Loire at Saumur.
