Corton, Grand Cru Le Rognet,
-
2005
-
Domaine René Durand
Ref: A024705
Well, René's done it again. We tasted the 1963 when we visited in March. Quite mind blowing! Before this, the 2005 tasted utterly majestic with a minty, spicy, violets and chocolate bouquet and totally enticing, silky texture. Just so multi-layered and complex. A very long keeper and a star of the vintage without a doubt. René Durands Corton Grand Cru le Rognet is one of the regions iconic wines and is only available in tiny quantities. This 2005 vintage in Corton produced immensely concentrated wines with great structure and ageing-potential.This is a rich muscular wine loaded with tannins which are beautifully ripe. The length of this wine is phenomenal and it will need several years cellaring to reveal its greatness. Drink 2011 to 2025 and beyond.
Every region needs its eccentrics and, in René Durand, the Côte de Nuits has got one! For those of our customers who remember André Vignal at Domaine St. Georges, in the Côtes du Rhône, René is a brilliant understudy! He lives in a past era but still manages to make some of the most delectable wines that you can imagine. Making an order chez Durand can be something of a minefield as he's always out in the vineyards, hates technology and would prefer to speak person to person. We live with this as we would really miss not having his wines on our list. The Durand 2005's are extra special, very profound and exceptional value.
René Durand has an infectious sense of humour but is also an immensely talented wine-maker and a visit to his labyrinthine cellars cut into the Comblanchien rock (Comblanchien is renowned for its rose-coloured marble as well as its wines!) is always something we look forward to. This is the heartland of the Côte de Nuits Villages appellation (there are only 30-odd growers in the AOC) and the Durands villages wines see 15% new oak and are always of Nuits St. Georges quality, combining an open, flamboyant fruitiness with ripe, integrated tannins.
