Chassagne-Montrachet Rouge, 1Er Cru Les Champs Gains,
Chassagne-Montrachet Rouge, 1Er Cru Les Champs Gains, - 2005 - Domaine Jean-Marc Morey
Ref: A023605

Deep, ruby purple with a sweetly perfumed red-fruit bouquet and a bold, delineated 1er Cru structure and oodles of ripe red-cherry fruit. Fine length and tannins. Very well made, as usual! This is another phenomenal 2005. Hyper rich and powerful and loaded with rich, smokey raspberry and cherry flavours. The premier cru vineyard of Champs Gains always produces wines with more substance (what the French call 'matière') and this is no exception. The wine is rich and intense but the vintage will allow it to be drunk sooner than is often the case. There are still the typical Champs Gains tannins which will require a few years to soften. Drink 2008- 2013 and beyond.

Jean-Marc, now ably assisted by his daughter, Caroline, is really back on form. After a run of tragedies in the early 1990’s (when he lost his wife to a tragic illness and, shortly after, an old friend and employee was killed in a tractor accident) Jean-Marc has rebuilt his life and has re-emerged as one of the leading lights in the village of Chassagne.

Using only indigenous yeasts for the fermentation, maximum lees-contact prior to the first racking, 15% new oak casks and, above all, early bottling in September, this father and daughter team have managed to achieve a range of whites that exhibit a purity of rich fruit (coupled with a mouth-tingling freshness) that is rare to find.

We have been buying Jean-Marc's wines since the early 1980's and our loyalty to this remarkable wine maker is second-to-none. A visit to his cellars is always a lengthy affair, not only because he has such an array of wines to taste but really due to his infectious sense of humour and broad knowledge of the world of wine-making. J-M eschews the press and believes firmly in his long-established customer base. He must be taking the right approach as it is impossible to get an allocation of his wines unless you are 'part of the club'! Another wine maker who is brilliant at making white or red wines, as the six wines in this offer are testament to.
