Corton Chalemagne, Domaine Bonneau Du Martray

Domaine Bonneau du Martray
Ref: A019103
To Most, Domaine Bonneau du Martray is Corton Charlemagne - one of the greatest of all the Grand Cru white Burgundies, synonymous with a style that combines an aching richness, length and concentration with an incomparable finesse and purity. Jean-Charles le Bault de la Morinière, whose family is only the third set of owners in over twelve centuries, calls his wine the product of light rather than heat - a consequence of the domaine's unique aspect, facing west and south west, that formidably increases the influence of light on the vines particularly in the afternoon and early evening without running the risk of excessive heat.
Bonneau du Martray is the only one of two Burgundian properties (Domaine Romanée Conti being the other) to only produce Grand Cru wines and they hold the largest holding of Corton Charlemagne - nine and a half hectares.
So what of the 2003 vintage? From a yield of just 27.3 hl/ha (33% lower that the very small 2002 vintage), Domaine Bonneau du Martray has produced, in a growing season that broke all records for heat and dryness, a wine of exceptionally lush fruit, prodigious power but with an almost eery balance of great purity, freshness and length.
Flashing green and gold in colour. The nose is initially subdued but then opens with fatly perfumed fruits, flashes of seductively ripe, heavy scent and latent minerality. The palate is almost creamy, generously structured, both open and concentrated yet with an eery kick of finesse that lifts the weight effortlessly to a broad, sustained finish of impressive length. Jean-Charles called this wine 'foudroyant' - literally 'thunderous.' This describes its power and authority brilliantly.
