Batard Montrachet - 2004 - Domaine Jean-Marc Morey

This Grand Cru white Burgundy is from the very top of the tree in quality terms. Made in totally miniscule quantities (Jean-Marc shares a few rows with his brother Bernard which they both inherited from their father, Albert). He manages to make about 3 barrels in an ordinary harvest.

2004 showed a return to a more typical style of wine after the excesses of 2003. This wine has enormous structure with layers of complex fruit and superbly tuned acidity. It will require another 3 years before it will begin to truly express itself. It represents the very appex of great white burgundy. Drink from 2007 - 2013.

Jean-Marc, now ably assisted by his daughter, Caroline, is really back on form. After a run of tragedies in the early 1990’s (when he lost his wife to a tragic illness and, shortly after, an old friend and employee was killed in a tractor accident) Jean-Marc has rebuilt his life and has re-emerged as one of the leading lights in the village of Chassagne.

Using only indigenous yeasts for the fermentation, maximum lees-contact prior to the first racking, 15% new oak casks and, above all, early bottling in September, this father and daughter team have managed to achieve a range of whites that exhibit a purity of rich fruit (coupled with a mouth-tingling freshness) that is rare to find.

Jean-Marc does not believe in using too much new oak and matching the style of the vintage to the quantity of new oak barrels required. We have been dealing with the Morey family for nearly twenty years when the estate was in the hands of father, Albert.
