St.Julien - Second wine of Château Ducru-Beaucaillou

Loaded with cedary, blackcurrant fruit this 2000 is beginning to drink very well although it could easily be cellared for a further 10 years.

Château Beaucaillou had the name Ducru prefixed to it in honour of a previous owner of the estate. Ironically under the Ducru family the buidlings fell into a state of some disrepair and it was only in the mid 1800s when the château was purchased by the highly-reputed Négociant family of Nathaniel Johnston that the necessary improvements were made. Ducru is now owned by Jean-Eugène Borie.

The vineyards on the estate are affectionately calles ' des beaux cailloux' (the beautiful pebbles) and cover 50 hectares of gravel crests adjacent to the Gironde. It is undoubtedly one of the great wines of the Médoc.

The grape mix is 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot with 5% each Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.
