Château Moulin Riche

Château de Myrat
Ref: A038895
Château Moulin Riche is the second wine of that stunning performer, Château Léoville Poyferré.
Léoville Poyferré is one of the five second growths of St Julien in the 1855 classification. It is one of three properties that were created from the dissolution of the great Léoville estate following the French Revolution. Initially there were four heirs to the giant estate, including the Marquis de Las Cases. The portion sold by the Marquis to Hugh Barton was to become Chateau Léoville Barton. The remainder eventually came into the hands of the Marquis two children. That taken by the son, Jean-Pierre, was destined to become Léoville Las-Cases, whilst the portion owned by his daughter, Jeanne, was passed onto her daughter, who married Baron Jean-Marie de Poyferre. This is the part that is today known as Léoville Poyferré.
Despite its illustrious history, the wines of Chateau Léoville Poyferré were, for a long time, a sequence of sorry disappointments. During the 1960s and 1970s the wines were charmless and ungiving, to the dismay of those who were aware of Léoville Poyferré's terroir and potential for producing one of the greatest red wines of the Médoc, akin to Léoville Las-Cases and Léoville Barton. In 1979 Didier Cuvelier took the helm, and things started to turn around. There were a number of favourable vintages during the 1980s, particularly 1982, 1983 and 1985, and Léoville Poyferré turned out some lovely wines. During the 1990s, quality has truly been in the ascendant, and it seems clear that Poyferré has begun to produce the standard of wines of which it is capable. The changes implemented by Didier Cuvelier should surprise no one. Cleaning up the winemaking process was facilitated by extensive modernisation of the cellars. Advice was taken from local oenologist Michel Rolland. The quantity of new oak in use was increased, and a second wine, Château Moulin Riche, was introduced.
