Full of ripe berry fruit with a toasty, vanilla oakiness.

The Phélan Ségur estate came into being at the beginning of the 19th century when the progressive Frank Phélan joined two properties, Clos de Garamey and Château Ségur, together. The Gardiner family took over the property in 1985 but they were soon to be hit by three unsaleable vintages. A pesticide used in the vineyard had contaminated and ruined the vintages of 1983,84 and 85. However, from 1986, Château Phelan Segur has produced top notch wines. In a vintage like 1998, this estate produced wines that are meaty and long lived. They have a ripe berry fruitiness with notes of cherry and toasty vanilla from spending fifteen months in oak, 30% of which is new. Supple tannins frame the picture.
