Château La Gaffelière - 2003 - Château la Gaffelière

1er Grand Cru Classé St. Emilion

Always the 1er Grand Cru St. Emilion that exhibits the most finesse. The 2003 has an unusually dark colour and a distinctive mocha coffee and toasty oakiness. Fuller-bodied than normal it has an exquisite depth of black fruits supported by fine-grained tannins and a pervasive finish. Drink 2010 to 2020.

From the very beginning the land surrounding La Gaffelière has been dedicated to vines. In 1969 an excavation unearthed mosaics from the Gallo-Roman period depicting fruiting vines indicating that vine and wine culture took place at this "palace" (as early as the 4 th century). The exact area of the excavations is know as "le Palat" or palace.

Le Palat is today the site of Château La Gaffelière that takes its name from the medieval sickroom situated on the estate where lepers (or "gaffets") were cared for.

There are 25 hectares under vines which are 65% Merlot, 30% Cabernet-Franc and 5% Cabernet-Sauvignon.
