Château La Gaffelière - 1988 - Château la Gaffelière

1er Grand Cru Classé St. Emilion

Less of a New Wave St. Emilion the wine exhibits a delicacy and finesse whilst still showing an elegant fruity character. The 1988 has a purple garnet-red colour. On the palate there are flavours of coffee, tea, cherry and nutmeg. The tannins are realtively firm still and the finish is quite dry.

From the very beginning the land surrounding La Gaffelière has been dedicated to vines. In 1969 an excavation unearthed mosaics from the Gallo-Roman period depicting fruiting vines indicating that vine and wine culture took place at this "palace" (as early as the 4 th century). The exact area of the excavations is know as "le Palat" or palace.

Le Palat is today the site of Château La Gaffelière that takes its name from the medieval sickroom situated on the estate where lepers (or "gaffets") were cared for.

There are 25 hectares under vines which are 65% Merlot, 30% Cabernet-Franc and 5% Cabernet-Sauvignon.
