Château Barrabaque, Cuvée Prestige,

Château Barrabaque
Ref: A033199
Canon Fronsac
It is widely accepted that Château Barrabaques Cuvée Prestige is amongst the very best wines of the appellation. The Cuvée Prestige is extraordinarily lush and thickly textured, has an intense dark purple colour. The bouquet radiates hints of fresh herbs, cocoa and bay-leaf whilst the concentration on the palate is particularly surprising. This beautiful 9-hectare property stands on a hill, over-looking the Dordogne river and its vineyards are on chalky, limestone soils with the average age of the vines being a little over twenty-five years old. The wine is aged in 50% new oak barriques for 12-14 months where it also undergoes its malo-lactic fermentation, something that is very much the fashion in Bordeaux today. It is bottled unfiltered, only being lightly fined with egg whites.
The vineyards of Fronsac and Canon-Fronsac lie to the west of Pomerol and St. Emilion, situated between the Dordogne river and one of its tributaries, the Isle. It is only in the last twenty years that the wines of these two appellations have made their mark. The best vineyard sites are situated on limestone and clay-limestone soils and they are protected from spring frosts by their proximity to the two rivers. The wines have never been classified and, due to their lack of track record, it is only recently that it has been possible to put the numerous (often very small) vineyards in to some form of category. In general terms, the smaller of the two appellations, Canon-Fronsac, situated on steeper, hillier vineyards, produce the finer quality wines although there are some remarkable quality wines coming from the Fronsac region. As with most Right Bank zones, the Merlot variety is omni-present although it is often blended with small percentages of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. This is a region that is very much on the up and where some great values are still to be had.
