We have been particularly impressed by the Collet Carte Noire Brut which is a very serious champagne with considerable depth and fruit, combined with an unusual complexity at this price range. This is not surprising, however, as it is a blend of 40 separate ‘crus’ and has had over three years in bottle, prior to shipment. It is a blend of 10 % Chardonnay, 25 % Pinot Noir and 65 % Pinot Meunier and has a warm, golden-green colour, a toasty fruit-driven nose and considerable intensity on the palate. A champagne of body and substance, it is a warm golden colour with an intense, almost amber, hue. Initial impressions are of spices, fresh butter and ripe wheat. On the palate, it is vinous, powerful and robust

Situated in Aÿ in the heartland of the classic Champagne region, Raoul Collet, named after its founder, was founded in 1921 by a group of small, individual growers with the aim of creating a dynamic base to market and distribute their wines. By the beginning of the 1950’s, the business had developed in to a significant private ‘house’ and, in 1959, Monsieur Macquart, chairman of the local growers’ syndicate, took over the running of the organisation which, since then, has gone from strength to strength. They currently own just over 450 hectares of vineyards situated amongst some of the region’s finest villages.
