Bollinger Grande Année Brut
-
1999
-
Bollinger
Ref: A072999
A beautifully rounded Champagne with great structure combining richness, complexity and intense aromas.
The original vineyards used to source the grapes for Joseph Bollinger's wines in the early 18th century were owned by his father-in-law, Comte de Villermont who did not want to sully his name with any connection to 'trade' and therefore insisted that the resulting champagne bear the name 'Bollinger.'
During the difficult years of the Second World War, the firm was looked after Mme Lily Bollinger who is often quoted giving her definitive reasons for drinking Champagne:
"I drink it when I'm happy and when I'm sad. Sometimes I drink it when I'm alone. When I have company I consider it obligatory. I trifle with it if I'm not hungry and I drink it when I am. Otherwise I never touch it, unless I'm thirsty."
Mme Lily Bollinger was the last of the Bollinger family to run the business which passed to her nephew, Christian Bizot on her death.
The House of Bollinger only produces vintage champagnes in exceptional years, when the grapes have reached a perfect quality and maturity with a perfect balance between the acids and sugars. Hence the denomination "Grande Année" given to this champagne which, unlike the "Special Cuvée", is only produced from grapes of that particular harvest.
The Bollinger Grande Année remains, however, a blended wine from crus and grape varieties. In this sense it too carries the expression of the House style. However, in this case, the style is also dependent on the characteristics of the given vintage. It is the best wine Bollinger can produce in an individual year by exposing its particular character.
La Grande Année 1999 is a blend of 65% Pinot Noir and 35% Chardonnay sourced from 17 individual villages, 82% of the blend coming from grand cru vineyards with the remainder from premier cru. The first fermentation takes place exclusively in oak barrels which, we think, is unique in the Champagne region.
