Marsanne, Thomas Mitchell

Mitchelton Estate
Ref: A206507
This wine displays varietal Marsanne fruit characters of honeysuckle and rockmelon (canteloupe). Ripe fruit flavours, balanced by crisp acid and a lingering finish, are trademarks of this wine.
Mitchelton's signature white wine. Marsanne is native to the Rhône Valley in France, although it's found a second home at Nagambie in its 70 year history in the Goulbourn Valley of Victoria. Marsanne is known for its rich, honeysuckle flavours, making it a popular alternative to Chardonnay. It responds well to barrel fermentation and ageing, when it can easily live for 20 years or more, and is sometimes known as the white wine for red drinkers.
The Mitchelton vineyard site took two years to find. In 1967 Melbourne entrepreneur Ross Shelmerdine commissioned wine industry legend Colin Preece to find the best site for premium wine grape growing anywhere in south eastern Australia. He chose an old grazing estate, then known as Blackwood Park, in the Nagambie district for its climate, soil and proximity to the waterways. Shelmerdine called his fledgling winery Mitchelton, a diminutive of Mitchellstown and the vineyard's first sod was turned in 1969. Don Lewis joined Preece for the fledgling winery's first vintage in 1973, and assumed the winemaker's mantle when Preece retired in 1974. That same year, Mitchelton's winery and spectacular cellar door complex, designed by renowned Australian architect Ted Ashton and complete with 55 metre tower, was officially opened.
For over 15 years Thomas Mitchell wines have been acclaimed for their approachability, food friendliness and value. Produced using premium grapes from selected vineyards in South-Eastern Australia, Thomas Mitchell wines exhibit true varietal fruit flavours and are crafted for enjoyment from time of release. The Thomas Mitchell range is for the wine drinker looking for approachable, affordable Victorian varietal styles.
