Margan Family Wine Growers
Ref: A207807
Pale gold green in colour. The nose has lifted tropical passionfruit characters, hints of lime, green apple and some Verdelho spice. The palate is full and balanced with sweet fruit characters, finishing with tangy fresh acid and lingering spice. This wine has been made to be consumed young and fresh, but with age, the wonderful tangy characters of the fruit will give way to more complex flavours.
A variety with great potential from the Hunter. There is a consistent style and quality produced from Verdelho, coming out of the Hunter, that will gain increasing market acceptance. The Margan Verdelho is characterised by lifted perfumed tropical fruit characters with a rich, full-bodied palate and a crisp clean finish. This variety is also unoaked and is a perfect accompaniment to spicy food. The Margan Family first planted grapes in the Hunter Valley in 1965. The second generation of Margan winegrowers, Andrew & Lisa Margan, selected the Broke Fordwich sub-region of the Hunter Valley to plant their own vineyards in 1989. The rich red volcanic clay slopes and alluvial flats of Broke Fordwich are the home to over 50 acres of vines that produce the distinctive wines of Margan Family.
The Margan's first vintage was 1997. A state of the art winery was completed on the Margan "Ceres Hill" property in time for the 1998 vintage. The winery has been built to handle up to 700 tonnes of fruit using only the best equipment available to make wines of outstanding varietal definition. The wines are carefully hand-crafted under the winemaking skills of Andrew Margan. With over 25 vintages of experience both in Australia (specifically Tyrrell's Wines), and in Europe, Andrew Margan combines his understanding of vineyard management with his winemaking expertise to craft wines of individual character and finesse.
The use of modern techniques in both the vineyards and the cellar ensure the best varietal definition is created from the grapes used for the Margan brand. Soft easy drinking wines with concentration on fruit flavour are the key to the wines of Andrew Margan. Oak is used only where necessary to enhance the complexity of the wine. The goal is to produce wines that are ready to drink upon release and match perfectly with food.
