Bonarda Colonia Las Liebres
-
2006
-
Altos las Hormigas
Ref: A121006
The excellent 2006 Bonarda has a lovely vibrant colour that leads to a damsony fruit on the nose and a lively, accessible character on the palate.
Altos las Hormigas is situated in the township of Lujan de Cuyo, on a gentle slope at about 800 meters above sea level, facing the Andes range in the East, protected westward by a minor geological fold. The estate's total area is 206 hectares, 40 of which planted.
The only varietals planted are Bonarda and Malbec, clones are obtained from careful field selection. The vineyards have a density of over 4,000 plants per hectare, and were planted between 1996 and 1999, free of root stock and raised with the guyot method.
At the heart of the property stands the 2,000 square meter cellar with its capacity for 7,500 hectolitres plus approximately 1,125 hectolitre capacity in small oak.
Completed in 2001, the cellar was designed to have minimal impact on the territory, respecting the local traditional architecture. Inside, however, it is designed to achieve the very best technical conditions, such as temperature control, hygienic impeccability and a streamlined functionality with respect to all wine making processes.
The grapes are sourced from two different vineyards, one in Rivadavia, in the warmer, eastern part of Mendoza, and the other, Ugarteche, in the cooler part of Mendoza. The grapes from Rivadavia give depth and structure to the blend, while those from Ugarteche give perfume and lift. Both vineyards are over 30 years old. The climate in both vineyards is semi-desert climate with hot days and very cool nights
Vinification takes place in 300hl stainless steel tanks with temperature control at 28-30 Celsius, 10 days time from crushing to pressing, with daily racking and return for a gentle extraction. The wine goes through malolactic fermentation and is vinified without use of oak.
