Pol Roger Brut Rosé 2004

Pol Roger Brut Ros 2004

Ref: A073506

A fabulous rosé from a superb vintage - light and elegant with hints of dried fruit.

Pol Roger was born on Christmas Eve in 1831, the first son of Pierre Charles Jean-Baptiste Roger, a lawyer based in Ay. Pol chose not to follow his father's footsteps, but received his support when he announced that he wanted to set up as a negociant or wholesaler. This he did at the age of seventeen using his father's business contacts as customers.

1849 saw the birth of the new Champagne house as Pol began to create his own cuvées rather than bringing in wine from other houses. The first Pol Roger Cuvées went on sale in 1853 and his sales in the first six months were 3769 bottles and 825 half bottles. Today that has grown to around 1.5 million per annum.

Pol Roger recently celebrated its 150th anniversary and is perhaps best known as Winston Churchill's favourite Champagne. The house is still family-owned and has a reputation for producing champagnes of great finesse and elegance which age very well.

The traditional formula for the Pol Roger Vintage Rosé is composed of 60% Pinot Noir and about 40% Chardonnay drawn from around twenty Grands and Premiers Crus. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks (each variety from each village being kept seperate at this stage). About 15% of the Pinot Noir from grapes grown in the village of Bouzy on the Montagne de Reims is vinified into red wine and this is added later to the regular blend to achieve the required colour.

The second fermentation (in the bottle) takes place deep down in Pol Roger's lowest cellars (33 meters below street level) where remuage is still done by hand.

2004 was an exceptional year in Champagne combining those two grails - quality and quantity. Pol Roger's 04 rosé is an intense golden pink in coclour. Wild strawberry and raspberry aromas dominate the intense nose while a fantastically elegant lightness on the palate is underlined by subtle hints of dried apricots and mint.

Rosé Champagne works surprisingly well with a variety of dishes. Pan fried fois gras with redcurrants would partner it well as would air dried hams such as Pata Negra or Jabugo. Tagines, satay and even curry also work well.

Champagne Gremillet
Extremely elegant wines that have undergone a surprisingly long bottle-ageing process that gives them a roundness not often found at this level.
