The nose on this brilliant wine still remains closed. Fantastic balance, a deep, brooding colour and a stunning finish all stick out but not as much as it's sleek, velvety style and concentrated fruit. Bursting with an enticing flavour of ripe black cherry fruit and bitter dark chocolate. This 2006 Charmes is amongst the epitome of top flight Gevrey - packed full of concentrated fruit with a commensurate amount of acidity and life-preserving tannins to ensure this wine's longevity in the cellar. It will reward the patient. Drink 2012 to 2030. Great finds these days, especially in the Côte de Nuits, are hard to come by but a chance recommendation from "Mimi" who, six years' ago, was still running the "Cultivateurs" in Nuits St. Georges, led us to Didier Chevillon at this 22-hectare estate. Having taken over from his father-in-law, about 10 years' ago, Didier has transformed these prime-site vineyards and is now selling 75% of the production in bottle. Jadot, Latour and Laurent buy the rest. He is a very fine red wine-maker and has the advantage of some decent old vine vineyards. The wines are exceptionally true to their terroir but also have a depth and structure that make him one of the village' rising stars. Father Dupont is a quintessential Burgundian - full of impish humour, good wine and genuine advice. However, it is his son-in-law, Didier Chevillon who is the driving force behind this top-quality, 25 hectare estate. Until recently, the majority of their wines have been sold to Jadot and Faiveley, but Didier is now bottling a considerable amount of wine himself and has a serious restaurant following throughout France. These are hand crafted wines of the highest quality and are amongst the finest Côte de Nuits reds we have recently tasted. Now that we have established a track record with the family, we now have a decent allocation of some of their Premier and Grand Cru wines. The Mazis-Chambertin there is an emphasis on finesse and elegance but an amazing vigorous intensity of fruit ensures great length and class. The two Premier Crus (Petite Chapelle and Cazetières) are silky and opulent with concentrated black cherry fruit with a whiff of new oak.
